EWIS II

EWIS Ⅱ is operating in the C-band weather radar.

It uses a magnetron-transmitter and an analog receiver. The polarization is oriented linear horizontal. A reflectivity volume scan contains 12 elevation angles (typical: 0.5°, 0.9°, 1.3°, 2.4°, 3.5°, 4.5°, 6.0°, 8.0°, 10.0°, 15.0°, 25.0° & 40.0°). Doppler scans contain 9 elevation angles (typical: 0.5°, 1.3°, 2.4°, 5.0°, 7.0°, 10.0°, 15.0°, 20.0° & 30.0°). The complete volume scan needs 15 minutes.

The first installations were in the late 1980’s as a conventional Non-Doppler Radar. The designation was UBS 103. The weather radar network in Spain was established with 14 such radars. A modernisation changed the classification to Doppler-Radar in 2010 (since then the name EWIS Ⅱ). The radar is operational in Island near the airport Keflavík. It is located about 257 km from the Grímsvötn volcano, and 153 km from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano.
